The heavy rains of the last few days have, unfortunately claimed precious lives, but two auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) braved the elements, a swollen river and an impassable road in order to attend to a pregnant woman and delivered her healthy baby successfully.
Through Twitter, the National Health Mission, Meghalaya, highlighted the case in a West Garo Hills village.
The mother, a Hepatitis B patient, could not travel to the nearest health centre because of the disruption caused by the weather. The village was cut off to ambulances because of rising water levels in the nearby river as well.
But, when all hope seemed lost, the two unnamed ANMs from Romgre Sub-Centre walked to the village by crossing the swollen stream to help the mother deliver her child at home. The healthy baby girl and mother are both stable.
“Thank you, Romgre SC ANMs, for your determination and perseverance even in the midst of difficulty and trouble,” NHM Meghalaya tweeted. “We salute you for your affection and care for the previous lives. You have truly inspired us to give more in everything we do.”
