Those who spread conspiracy theories regarding the Covid-19 pandemic should be slapped with criminal cases, Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek said today.
Social media is filled with such bogus conspiracy theories, which claim all manner of nonsense, including that the virus is a fraud and a way for the government to make money from the gullible.
“It is the medical experts who have declared Covid-19 as a pandemic, not politicians,” Hek said today.
Meanwhile, on the rise in new recoveries from the virus, the minister said that, although the signs are encouraging, nothing can be read into it at the moment as there have still been large numbers of new infections over the last few days.
Hek also informed that a public day of prayer will be observed on May 30 in Meghalaya for citizens across all religions in memory of those who have lost their lives to Covid-19 and those who are still recovering.
More than 32,000 people have been infected with the coronavirus, according to official statistics, in the state, with more than 8,000 currently afflicted and 512 having died. May has seen 341 Covid-related deaths in Meghalaya, by far the most for any month.
