BJP legislator Alexander L Hek has expressed doubt that the State will be able to set up a medical college without any delay.
Health Minister James PK Sangma in the recently concluded Assembly session informed that the construction of the Shillong Medical College is under active consideration and is engaging a new group after scrapping a deal with Kolkata-based KPC Group.
Hek, who had earlier held the portfolio however said, “I really don’t know what will happen to setting up the Shillong Medical College. The foundation stone and MoU was signed with the group in 2012 and now after a gap of almost ten years the agreement has been scrapped.”
According to him the company (KPC group) might challenge it in the court of law and expressed concern that in the event of such happenings, the project will be further delayed.
It may be mentioned that the contract with KPC group for the construction of the Medical College was cancelled after it wanted to extend the lease agreement from 30 years to 99 years and also hiked the price for construction.
The State government has identified a new site at 50 acres in New Shillong Township for the construction after rejecting the already available site in R.P Chest Hospital, Mawbah.
