Shillong, Mar 11: Former North Tura legislator, John Leslee K Sangma, has expressed disappointment over the recent ruling by the Meghalaya High Court related to a notification issued by the GHADC executive committee, which mandates a Scheduled Tribe certificate for candidates contesting the elections.
Sangma stated that this ruling reveals a significant setback for the aspirations of the A’chik people.
According to Sangma, the observation made by the High Court exposed the government’s failure in addressing the needs of the A’chik community. He said the only reason that the ‘Notification’ has been set aside is that it is “half baked” and did not follow the procedure.
“The ruling exposed the shocking reality of the lack of seriousness of the NPP government which was at the helm of affairs in the GHADC and still is in the State,” he said.
Sangma criticized the NPP for allegedly neglecting the interests of the people during their governance in the GHADC. He remarked that the past five years were wasted, and that the executive committee’s last-minute notification seemed like an electoral ploy. “The NPP’s actions indicate a lack of seriousness towards our community,” he said.
