North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) organised a ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ march today on its campus to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Independence.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla flagged off the march, starting from the Department of Law to the Multi-Use Convention Hall. The march also saw the participation of CRPF jawans who were joined by the force’s Deputy Inspector General.
More than 1,000 students, some of whom were dressed in the traditional attire of the eight North East states, teachers and staff of NEHU took part.
Director General of Police, Lajja Ram Bishnoi, was the chief guest at the following programme and Stalward Lyngskhor, Sordar of Sohbar Sirdarship, was the guest of honour.
Bishnoi elaborated on the importance of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and why it is relevant in the present time to enlighten the youth to be more patriotic. He also mentioned the sacrifices of our freedom fighters who gave their lives for our freedom, especially those from the North East, such as U Tirot Sing Syiem. Bishnoi further emphasised on the role the youth play in building the nation but that the menace of drug abuse is diverting them onto a very dangerous road.
While speaking about the contribution of the North East in the struggle for freedom, Shukla mentioned that Tirot Sing is an unsung hero whose name we rarely find in the history books. The same can be said about U Kiang Nangbah from Jaintia Hills and Pa Togan Sangma from Garo Hills, the VC added. Shukla also mentioned other freedom fighters from the North East, like Gomdhar Konwar, Maniram Dewan, Madhu Malik, Urbidhar Barua, Mahidhar Sarma, Madhuram Koch of Assam, Maharaj Kulchandra, Tikendrajit of Manipur, the Angami Nagas and the Lushais of Mizoram as well.
As part of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’, a photo exhibition was also held on the same premises. The exhibition featured the villages of Sohbar, which was a place of resistance to British imperialism.
