Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan today addressed the first day of the budget session of the State Assembly in Hindi and also spoke a few lines in Khasi and Garo language.
However, his address was brief due to his health conditions and it ended in a few paragraphs. He had mentioned that the House can refer to the copy of his speech which was distributed.
The Governor’s speech in Hindi was interpreted into English by a translator arranged by the Assembly secretariat. MLAs could hear the translated speech on their headphones.
Meanwhile, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) has said that for the benefit of the people the State must have a Governor who addresses the House in English.
“That is for the convenience of the people outside the House,” VPP president and Nongkrem legislator Ardent M. Basaiawmoit told media persons after the session.
Basaiawmoit said that the party hopes that the government will take up the matter seriously and take up with the government of India that in the future they should send a governor who can communicate in the language the people understand.
He also said that this is the first time the Governor finished his address to the House in a short time.
