Governor of Meghalaya Phagu Chauhan paid his maiden visit to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and inaugurated its new library here today.
In his address, the Governor expressed his pleasure at to be part of the ceremonious programme and extended his greetings to the KHADC members and the people of Meghalaya.
Speaking to reporters the KHADC Chief Executive Member, Pyniaid Sing Syiem said that the library will be of great help to gather information including information related to traditional governance, land, social customs and practices, and various acts and bills including the oldest house proceedings.
“We also have the first district council proceedings dated right back to 1952 when it was still United Khasi-Jaintia district council and also the oldest book on Khasi language authored by Rev W Pryse 1855,” he said, adding, the library houses various books on the Khasi customs and practices, etc.
Syiem said the library will preserve such documents that will be of great help to research scholars and others.
He also informed that they would also try to digitise the library and also try to create an archive to preserve the Acts and regulations which were passed by the council during the past many years.
The CEM said he is hopeful that the library will be expanded with funds from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Ministry of Culture.
Deputy CEM Pynshngainlang Syiem, Executive Members and senior council members were present on the occasion.
