Shillong, Dec 3: In the face of rising challenges of drug abuse and teenage pregnancy, as well as health crises such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and cancer, Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar has stressed on the need for immediate action and proactive measures to guide the youth towards healthier choices.
Vijayashankar, who is also President of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Meghalaya State Branch, during an annual general meeting of the society held in Raj Bhavan today emphasised the significant role of educational institutions and the Red Cross in this fight.
He stressed that the Red Cross along with educational institutions must remain proactive and vigilant in guiding students towards healthy choices, strong moral foundations and responsible behaviour.
The Governor also referred to climate change, pandemics, and socio-economic disparities. These factors contribute to the vulnerability of young people, making the mission of the Red Cross even more relevant. He called for continued innovation and capacity-building initiatives to promote community resilience. By addressing these challenges effectively, the Red Cross can remain a strong pillar of support for the youth, he said.
The Governor encouraged the Society to persist in its noble mission of bringing hope, healing, and support to vulnerable communities across Meghalaya.
The meeting was attended by Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai, Health and Family Welfare Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, who was inducted as the Vice-President of the Red Cross Society
Officials from Red Cross and state government, including River O Wahlang, Chairman IRCS, HC Choudhary Principal Secretary to the Governor, General Secretary, IRCS and others.
The meeting also reviewed the activities and achievements of the past year and discussed strategies to strengthen future humanitarian actions in the State.
