Shillong, Aug 11: A local unit of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has sounded the alarm on the growing issue of unchecked influx and illegal immigration along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
In a letter to Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, the GSU expressed concerns over the significant influx of people from neighbouring states and countries into the Ampati region, warning of potential demographic shifts and security challenges.
The union has called for immediate action, including regular influx and immigrant checks along the border, establishment of influx checking gates at key entry points and enforcement of the taskforce committee to monitor and control influx.
The GSU also sought urgent documentation and verification of households of suspected illegal settlers in several border areas, citing a steady rise in population in these locations.
Referring to eviction drives in Assam and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, the GSU cautioned against Meghalaya becoming a “dumping ground” for illegal immigrants. The union has offered to cooperate with the administration and police in carrying out checks and may initiate its own monitoring drives.
