The Garo Students Union (GSU) has alleged that there is rampant discrimination against Garo people in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL).
According to a press release issued today, the GSU said that Garo Hills is suffering from interrupted power supply due to a lack of sufficient numbers of staff.
While MeECL employees from Garo Hills are often posted in Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills, the reverse is not true, the pressure group claimed. It added that the state job reservation policy, which applies a quota of 40 percent each for the Khasi-Jaiñtia and Garo communities in government jobs, was not applied during the recruitment of Junior Engineers in 2020.
That year saw 72 candidates appointed exclusively from Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills and all of these employees were posted in Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills, the GSU added, referring to Right to Information (RTI) findings.
It also said that not a single Garo has been appointed in the post of Junior Assistant or Administrative Assistant in the MeECL head office.
