Shillong, Jul 25: The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) convened a general conference in Tura to chart the organisation’s forthcoming strategic roadmap in view of the political, constitutional and cultural challenges currently confronting the Garo region.
During the proceedings, the house unanimously endorsed two resolutions, namely a peaceful rally and submission of a memorandum in New Delhi in November and a public meeting and peaceful rally on September 27 in Tura.
The GSMC has resolved to embark on a national-level democratic exercise in the form of a peaceful rally and memorandum submission in New Delhi in November. The principal objective of this initiative is to highlight the long-pending demand for the creation of Garoland, a separate state under Article 3 of the Indian Constitution, ensuring justice, identity, and equitable governance for the indigenous Garo people. The memorandum is to be re-submitted to the President of India and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
A resolution was also passed to save the GHADC as necessary to save the Garo people. The council is not “merely a governance body, it is the living embodiment of Garo self-rule, traditional institutions and collective memory,” the GSMC said in a release. The GHADC is going through severe financial constraints at the moment, with staff unpaid for many months, if not years.
