Shillong, Aug 11: The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) has reiterated its request for a Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination centre in Tura to cater to aspirants from Garo Hills.
The GSMC had met with the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills in this regard in February and has now submitted a follow-up representation five months later to reinforce the urgency of the matter and to highlight the aspirations and hardships faced by numerous candidates from the Garo Hills region.
It was conveyed that a significant number of aspirants from this region are deeply motivated to appear for the UPSC examinations but they continue to face formidable challenges in pursuing their ambitions. The necessity of travelling to distant locations such as Shillong, Guwahati and other state capitals imposes both logistical and financial burdens. Many of these aspirants are constrained by limited economic resources and linguistic barriers, which in turn diminish their ability to compete on an equal footing with candidates from other regions.
Furthermore, the geographical remoteness of the Garo Hills and the limited transportation infrastructure exacerbate these difficulties. What could be a straightforward academic pursuit is often transformed into an arduous and costly undertaking, leading to the discouragement of many talented individuals who might otherwise succeed in the national competitive arena.
During a detailed discussion on the matter, the DC, Vibhor Agarwal, offered a positive and encouraging assurance. He expressed his personal commitment to work diligently throughout his tenure towards the establishment of a UPSC examination centre at Tura, the GSMC said in a release today. Agarwal affirmed that he would exert every possible effort to realise this objective at the earliest opportunity, engaging in close coordination with both state authorities and the central government.
