Pressure groups and the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Ri-Bhoi joined hands today to oppose the planned establishment of casinos in the district.
The decision to form the Joint Action Committee (JAC) was taken at a meeting today.
Pressure groups, traditional institutions, political parties and the church have all expressed misgivings about the government’s plans on turning the Ri-Bhoi area near the Assam border into a mini Macao.
The government has been at pains to make clear that Meghalayans will not be allowed into the casinos – they will be exclusively for visitors to the state, with Guwahatians the main target.
The JAC, however, has not been swayed by these assurances and demanded that the state government not grant permission for a single casino in Ri-Bhoi.
