Shillong, Aug 27: The A·chik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) has written to the Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) to complain about alleged irregularities in the appointment of staff, non-shortlisting of candidates and non-regularisation of Garo employees on the Tura campus.
Going back to 2022, the ASPF said that a “substantial” number of candidates were found eligible for the posts of Deputy Registrar and Assistant Registrar. However, “no interviews were conducted and it appears that the posts may have been filled without this mandatory selection stage. Such action undermines transparency, fairness and equal opportunity in public recruitment,” it said.
A second recruitment notification was issued in 2024 for multiple non-teaching posts, including four Deputy Registrars and four Assistant Registrars. However, there has still been no publication of shortlisted candidates, “raising concerns about delays, non-compliance with due process and possible administrative opacity.”
It added a call for the appointment of Garo officers at the level of Deputy Registrar and Assistant Registrar as this is crucial for the effective functioning of the Tura campus.
Recruitment delays and procedural lapses deprive qualified local candidates of opportunities in NEHU. “A significant number of local Garo employees currently serving there remain in temporary or contractual status for years without regularisation. This prolonged non-regularisation lowers employee morale and affects their sense of job security,” the ASPF said.
