Two graduates have petitioned Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma to accept MBA degree holders as lecturers in commerce stream within the state’s educational institutions.
Tony Tojrang B. Marak and Noelbirth A. Sangma, who are MBA graduates, said in many progressive states across India, MBA graduates are considered eligible as lecturers in the commerce stream, particularly in fields related to business administration, economics, finance, and management.
“In these states, institutions have recognised the broad and diverse skill set cultivated by an MBA degree, which aligns seamlessly with the academic requirements of teaching in commerce-related disciplines. However, this recognition has yet to be extended to MBA graduates in Meghalaya, a situation that we believe to be detrimental to the growth of both higher education and the local academic community,” the graduates said.
Stating that MBA graduates have undergone rigorous academic training that equips them with a deep understanding of business principles, economic theories, managerial strategies, financial practices, and leadership skills—competencies that are essential for effective teaching in the commerce stream, they said the knowledge gained is not confined to theoretical learning but is complemented by practical application in real-world business settings, making them ideally suited to teach subjects such as Business Management, Financial Management, Economics, Marketing, and Organizational Behaviour.
According to the graduates, this will not only enhance the quality of education in Meghalaya but will also ensure that the state’s educational institutions remain competitive with national and international standards, thereby fostering a more robust, future-ready educational framework.
