KP Pangniang, member Regional Committee, West Khasi Hills district and HS Samakha, chairman, Raid Mynsaw, Langpih has urged the state government to resume the interstate border talks with Assam.
In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, they informed that a public meeting was held in Langpih on April 19, 2025, attended by headmen, local leaders, villagers, and public representatives.
In the letter it was stated that after a thorough discussion, the meeting unanimously resolved to urge the government to resume talks on the Langpih sector’s interstate boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya.
“The meeting emphasized that the long-pending unsettled boundary has caused numerous threats and challenges to the residents,” Pangniang and Samakha stated in their letter.
They also informed that at the meeting it was resolved for the talks to be based on the mutually agreed principles adopted by the two states, which include – historical perspective, ethnicity of the local population, contiguity with the boundary, perception of people living in the area and administrative convenience.
Moreover, during the meeting the people of Langpih sector also expressed deep gratitude for the historic visit and joint meeting at Langpih on November 16, 2022 by the Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya.
“This historic visit by the Chief Ministers of both the states had shown the spirit of seriousness and commitment of both the states to settle the long pending dispute of interstate boundary of Meghalaya and Assam,” they stated.
As per reports, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will meet his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 2 to resume the stalled border talks.
The second phase border talks will cover Block I, Psiar-Khanduli in West Jaintia Hills; Block II, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, and Deshdoomreah in Ri-Bhoi and Langpih in West Khasi Hills district.
