The state government is looking to hobble various oversight bodies by delaying appointments and trying to weaken institutions, leader of the opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma, claimed today.
He said this in reference to delays in filling the vacancy for Chief Information Commissioner (empty since March) and chairperson for the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (empty since October 2020).
Such delays show that the government does not want these kinds of institutions, which are capable of empowering people and holding those in power accountable for irregularities and corruption, he opined.
The ex-Chief Minister also alleged that the government has been attempting to weaken, over its three and a half years in power, the institution of Lokayukta, which was designed to deter and punish corruption in high office.
The police service has also seen its fair share of chopping and changing officers which has “created an environment which has defiled the positive energy that was once visible in the police.”
The public are not blind to this manipulation, Dr Sangma added, and this has driven a sense of anger and frustration within the population, all of which could mean bad days ahead for Meghalaya.
