The state government will set up three colleges to focus on agricultural subjects in the state, the cabinet decided today.
Two will be set up in Kyrdemkulai, Ri-Bhoi, one for veterinary and another for dairy studies. A fisheries college will also be set up in Garo Hills, though the exact location has not been fixed on, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed.
He further mentioned that up to 100 faculty members will be recruited for the three colleges.
Meanwhile, on the vexed subject of better pay for ad hoc school teachers, the CM informed that the cabinet discussed the matter today but no decision was reached.
Ad hoc teachers are pushing for a pay hike and eventually bringing them up to the standards of pay of deficit teachers.
Sangma reiterated the government position, saying that the problem boils down to one of money.
“The reason it has to be put to cabinet is because we will have to cut the budget for other departments and their ministers need to be aware about that,” he said, adding that the pay hike demanded by the ad hoc teachers will cost hundreds of crores of rupees.
