The State government is likely to propose a date later this week for holding of the special session of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to elect the new Chief Executive Member.
It may be mentioned that GHADC Deputy Chairman Albinush Marak has been nominated to be the new CEM in view of widespread protest in Garo Hills against the present incumbent Rakesh Sangma.
Marak would replace Sangma once the election for the post of CEM is held in GHADC.
The special session has to be approved by the Governor after he received the proposal from the State government and GHADC.
Sangma had on February 25 announced his decision to step down from the CEM post. He is likely to resign from the post in a day or two.
A meeting of the 16 MDCs of the ruling NPP-led alliance met in Tura yesterday evening to discuss the strong public protest against the election of Sangma as CEM.
Later, the meeting unanimously decided to nominate Marak as the new CEM.
Marak, who is also MDC from Siju constituency will have to resign first from the post of Deputy Chairman of GHADC before running for the CEM’s election.
It may be mentioned that Sangma on January 31 got elected as the CEM of the GHADC.
In the election held for the post, Sangma secured 15 votes whereas his opponent Benedic Marak supported by the Trinamool Congress got 13 votes.
