Transport Minister, Dasakhiatbha Lamare said that his department will frame guidelines to enable bike taxis to resume services.
Lamare said the guidelines will seek to find a balance between the four-wheeler and two-wheeler taxis, as both plays an important role in providing optimum services to the people.
Stating that the local taxis have suffered because of the popularity of the bike services as the latter is a preferred mode of transport to beat the traffic snarls in the city, he said the government will try to bring about satisfaction and mutual benefits to both.
Acknowledging the employment opportunities that the Rapido and Uber have created he said, “It is accurate to say that it is hampering the employment issues because the bike services are providing employment, but there is also the growing resentment from the local four-wheel taxi service, which have taken a massive hit because of the bike service.”
The minister also said that there are complaints from the taxi drivers over the two-wheeler service and said, “Taxi drivers are not telling us to stop it. They are just requesting the department and whoever is authorised to please do something so that it does not affect them so much.”
However, he maintained that the government has not succumbed to anybody but it will come up with a decision that will meet the needs of the taxi drivers as well as the two-wheeler riders.
