Shillong, Nov 17:From a small start, 37 Meghalaya nurses are now working in Japan and more are expected to join in the coming months and years.
Today Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the Japanese language training programme organised by the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society. Labour Minister Methodius Dkhar and Nishikwa Toshiaki, Chairman and CEO of ASEAN Group Co Ltd, along with Japanese tutors and MSSDS officials, attended the event.
Sangma highlighted Meghalaya’s strong ties with Japan. “Our thought process is clear and focused – we don’t want multiple tie-ups with multiple nations. We want meaningful partnerships,” he said.
The CM recalled that two years ago, only two nurses were sent to Japan and now 37 are working there, with more expected to join. “Our nurses are sending about Rs 1 lakh back home monthly, generating Rs 5 crore in foreign exchange annually,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister urged the youth to utilize this opportunity to gain skills and experience, noting that the government is partnering with the ASEAN Group to facilitate the process. Eighty-six students have registered for the six-month Japanese language programme.
