The State government has finalised the schedule for the district council election for Khasi and Jaiñtia Hills and the proposal has been sent to the Governor for his approval.
The schedule includes the date for filing of nominations by candidates, date of election, date of announcement of results and others.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma told reporters that the schedule of the elections has been decided and approved by the cabinet. He said the date will be officially announced once approved by the Governor.
The State board examinations will be held in February next, the government is exploring a date which does not clash with the examinations.
The term of the present houses of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) was supposed to end in March this year.
However, due to the delimitation of constituencies, the term was extended twice for six months each.
Recently, the East Khasi Hills district administration held meetings with representatives of political parties to discuss preparations for the KHADC elections.
Two political parties in the State have announced their candidates for the district council polls.
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) had cleared its lists of candidates in all 29 constituencies for both the KHADC and JHADC.
The NPP has released its first list of candidates for the upcoming district council elections, which includes 18 candidates for the KHADC and 29 candidates for the JHADC.
The KHNAM has released the name of eight candidates in the first list for the KHADC polls.
The UDP is likely to declare its first list of candidates on December 13.
The Congress, HSPDP, BJP and Trinamool Congress are yet to announce their candidates for the district council polls.
