The state government has gained plenty of practice in issuing denials regarding illegal coal mining, so much so that it has become a well-scripted drama, leader of the opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma, said today.
“The government is always in prompt denial mode and that is their modus operandi,” Dr Sangma told reporters while referring to the latest in a string of mining tragedies, that at Umpleng in East Jaintia Hills.
According to the Congress leader, this denial is “well-scripted” and “more like a drama” where the same lines are repeated in every show.
These supposed illegal activities demonstrate that, while everyone else is focused on fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, the state government is focused “not to enrich the state but to enrich someone else.”
Unless there is an independent enquiry into alleged coal mining and transportation illegalities in the state, the truth will not be uncovered, he added, while stating that there is strong circumstantial evidence of criminal activity and it would not be difficult for an independent body to prove the accusations beyond doubt.
