Shillong, Oct 3: The state government is closely monitoring the Shillong-Dawki road, which has witnessed frequent landslides and accidents in recent months, Disaster Management Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said today.
Speaking to reporters, Rymbui expressed satisfaction that the central government has sanctioned the expansion of the road, which he said will boost economic activities and improve connectivity with the Tamabil export point in Bangladesh.
“At the same time, we have seen landslides and accidents leading to the loss of lives. Almost every day, something or the other is happening,” the minister noted.
Rymbui said the Deputy Commissioner, who also chairs the District Disaster Management Authority, along with the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) of Pynursla, have been keeping a close watch on the situation. “That is why circulars are often issued, whether from the district or the subdivision, restricting the movement of vehicles and people, especially during heavy rains,” he said.
The minister further hoped that once the monsoon ends, the construction company would speed up the work. “If the project is completed at the earliest, we will be able to avoid incidents of landslides that put the lives of commuters and vehicles in danger,” he added.
