The State government has given in-principle approval to the requirements as outlined in the master plan submitted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for expansion of Umroi airport.
This was revealed by the government today during the hearing of a PIL on the matter by the division bench of the Meghalaya High Court.
Additional Advocate General K Khan assisted by Additional Senior Government Advocate A H Kharwanlang produced before the court a DO letter dated September 27, 2024, wherein the State government acknowledged the requirements as outlined in the master plan submitted by the AAI.
Deputy Solicitor General Dr. Nitesh Mozika who appeared for the AAI told the High Court that in view of this positive development, the AAI will need some time to put together the proposal, to place before the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). He also sought eight weeks’ time for the same.
“This court notes that this is the first time that a concrete proposal has been placed for expansion of the Airport, and it is hoped that the same shall be taken to its logical conclusion, within the time given,” the division bench said while listing the matter for hearing on October 24.
