The District Social Welfare Department in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women and Jowai Women Police Station today felicitated Sawakani Lakiang for bringing laurels to West Jaintia Hills and the whole state by winning a gold medal in the SAARC Women’s Bikini Model Category, World Fitness Federation bodybuilding event.
This was organised by the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation and held in Mumbai on May 19. Sawakani also made history by becoming the only female athlete from Meghalaya to earn a Pro Card at the event.
Sawakani, from Tpeppale in Jowai, is also an ambassador of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, District Hub for Empowerment of Women, West Jaintia Hills.
The felicitation took place in the office of DSWO here. Sawakani was accompanied by her coach, Desire Kynjin, and family members. Officer Incharge Women Police, Inspector I Kharpran, District Mission Coordinator, FG Ryngnga, DHEW, officers and staff of the DSWO and DHEW were also present.
