Farmers from the Mawkynrew area have expressed great hardships in shifting to organic agriculture.
In this respect the farmers today met the Director of the department concerned and apprised him of how hard it has been for them without chemical fertilisers.
Amwel Roy Kharkongor of Umsning, Mawkynrew, said that many farmers have depended on chemical fertilisers for years and the sudden shift to organic farming is not an easy task, considering the soil quality and other factors.
The farmers also complained that they did not receive any real training in organic farming.
The Meghalaya government has been keen on pushing organic agriculture in the state and has even been bold enough to claim that organic farming is the norm, despite many being dependent on urea for fertilising their crops.
The FKJGP’s farmer cell, meanwhile, has promised the Mawkynrew delegation that it will soon meet Agriculture Minister and Mawkynrew MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh on the subject.
