Shillong, Oct 15: The Meghalaya High Court has ordered the State government to submit within three weeks details regarding steps taken to deal with drug addiction in the State.
In an order passed today, the division bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh asked the State government to file an affidavit about the measures for deaddiction and setting up of rehabilitation centres for drug addicts.
The order was passed by the court on the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Mewaker Lyngdoh.
Further, the High Court also directed the Central government to submit details in the form of an affidavit regarding the steps taken to stop entry of narcotic drugs in the State through the international border.
Earlier during hearing of the PIL today, senior lawyer S P Mahanta appearing on behalf of Lyngdoh told the court that no concrete steps have been taken by the government to curb the drug menace in the State. He also said that during a recent inspection by the petitioner, there were insufficient numbers of rehabilitation centres in the State.
The next hearing on the PIL will be held on November 18.
