Shillong, Sep 18: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) will release the pending salaries owed to its staff and assured to release their pay regularly from November, next.
The GHADC has accrued 44 months’ worth of salaries owed to its staff.
A letter to the employee association, dated today and signed by the secretary to the executive committee of the GHADC stated that the salaries would be paid for 10 months.
“The pending/backlog salaries will be cleared in three instalments at the earliest and monthly salary will be regularly paid with effect from November1, 2025,” the letter said.
The secretary also urged the protesting employees to resume their duties.
The State government had announced plans on taking on the responsibility of paying ADC staff salaries from November. However, this move has been objected by several political parties, and organisations stating that the proposal could erode the autonomous authority and self-governance mechanisms enshrined in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Meanwhile, a meeting was held at the Tura Circuit House between members of the GHADC Sub-Committee and MDCs to deliberate on the proposed bailout package and pending salaries.
The meeting also discussed the state government’s bailout plan, which includes the regular disbursement of salaries starting November 1.
