Employees of Garo Hills autonomous district council (GHADC) will meet in Tura tomorrow to decide on their next round of agitation after the council failed to clear their pending salaries.
The GHADC employees under the banner of Non-Gazetted Employees Association (NGEA) have set September 15 as a deadline to clear their salaries which are pending for over 31 months.
Sources said that the employees are likely to resort to an indefinite strike from this week which will cripple the functioning of the GHADC.
If the employees go on strike, it will be the second time in less than five years that GHADC will be affected by such a strike by employees.
GHADC Chief Executive Member Albinush Marak had earlier assured the NGEA that the pending salaries of the employees would be released by September.
However, he did not promise payment of all the pending salaries on grounds that GHADC is experiencing financial constraints.
The GHADC employees continue to receive salaries under the Fourth Pay Commission unlike their counterparts in the State government and Centre who are now receiving salary as per the fifth and sixth pay commissions respectively. Further, their salary increment has been stopped.
The salaries of the GHADC became irregular starting from the month of August, 2020 till now. The last time they received their dues was only for two months this year.
