Umroi MLA George B. Lyngdoh has been appointed as the new opposition chief whip in the State Assembly.
Lyngdoh is the MLA of the Trinamool Congress which is the principal opposition party in the State.
As per rules, only the principal opposition party can have the post of leader of opposition and opposition chief whip.
Lyngdoh’s appointment was notified by the Assembly Secretariat today following the resignation of incumbent Process T. Sawkmie, the Congress MLA from Mawlai.
Congress now has only five MLAs in the 60-member House after twelve of its MLAs recently merged with the Trinamool Congress.
The merger has been declared valid by the Assembly Speaker and Dr. Mukul Sangma has been officially appointed as the leader of opposition in the House.
