Shillong, Mar 5: Authorities in Garo Hills are on high alert and have issued public advisories and warnings against disturbances over the planned celebration of eight years of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance rule, which will be held on Friday in Tura.
The district administrations of West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills and North Garo Hills have issued public notices announcing extensive security and logistical arrangements for the programme to be held at the PA Sangma Sports Complex.
The event comes just one month before the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
While passing a prohibitory order today, the EGH District Magistrate referred to a 24-hour non-cooperation movement called for by the Garo Students Union in the whole of Garo Hills. The order, under Section 163 of the BNSS, prohibited obstruction to the functioning of government offices and/or the carrying of lathis, sticks, stones, firearms or any kind of lethal weapon by any person, group of persons or organisation.
The WGH district administration said that it has, in coordination with the police and other government departments, made comprehensive preparations to ensure the safe movement and participation of beneficiaries, invited guests and members of the public attending the event.
“Security personnel and Executive Magistrates will be stationed across the district from the early morning hours. Measures are intended to facilitate the safe movement and participation of beneficiaries, invited guests and members of the public attending the programme,” it added.
The general public has been encouraged to attend the programme without apprehension and extend their cooperation for its successful conduct.
Authorities, however, warned that any attempt to disturb public order or obstruct the peaceful conduct of the programme will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.
