Shillong, Sep 28: The Garo Enlightenment Society (GES) in Resubelpara is worried about a road construction project that could harm a small stream in Upper Rongjeng, East Garo Hills.
The stream, located just 1 metre from National Highway 217 and stretching about 250m, is a vital water body supporting aquatic life and plants. The road project, from Dainadubi to Darugre, managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and contractor Allone Infra Pvt Ltd, may soon destroy the stream’s natural habitat, change its water flow, and harm the local environment, GES said in a letter today.
GES says this project breaks environmental laws like the Environment (Protection) Act 1986 and the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974. It also pointed to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Act 2010. Projects like this need a proper Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and public discussions to avoid harming nature, it added.
