Four villages in South West Khasi Hills district are reeling under darkness after an electric transformer lie damaged.
This issue was flagged by the Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP) of the district to Sub Division Officer (SDO) Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL), Mawkyrwat Division.
The four villages included Jakrem, Jashiar, Laitnong and Shngimawleiñ.
District president, Kenes L. Nonglait told reporters today in Mawkyrwat that the organisation had received numerous complaints from residents of those villages.
“What amused us after meeting the SDO was that he referred us to meet Mawkyrwat MLA, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar” Nonglait stated, adding, “What does the MLA have to do with issues of electricity? We just hope that the authority that deals with power take this matter seriously for the welfare of the people, especially students.”
Nonglait also said that the absence of electricity during the night would embolden criminals to take advantage and therefore the department should work on the issue within this month. He also added that the FKJGP had also raised proper fencing of electric transformers to prevent any mishap.
