Residents of four villages in the disputed Block 2 region have made their demands clear that their land must be included in Meghalaya as part of the border resolution talks with Assam.
The four villages under Raid Nongtung are Malen, Mawlen 2, Umshatri and Pantalu and are dominated by members of the Khasi community.
Villagers, led by their respective headmen, today met leaders of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) to request that the pressure group take up their case with the state government.
Speaking to reporters, the headmen – Linshon Mukhim, Browel Khymdeit, Phrian Khymdeit and Edrolin Saring – said that, out of 18 villages in the disputed Block 2, these four villages should be under Meghalaya’s jurisdiction as all the residents are Khasis.
The headmen also said that, based on the historical facts, these four villages are Meghalayan and it also proved through their traditional identity and practices.
The KSU agreed with the villagers that the four villages should, by right, belong to Meghalaya. The KSU also sent a clear warning to the Karbi Students Association of Assam not to interfere in these four villages.
