Shillong, Sep 15: The mortal remains of five-time former Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Donwa Dethwelson Lapang, was laid to rest at the Jaiaw Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Weiking here on Monday. He passed away on Saturday due to age-related ailments.
People including leaders from various political parties turned up in large numbers to bid a tearful farewell to Lapang, known lovingly as ‘Maheh’.
The government had declared a three-day state mourning period from September 13. As per government directions, State funeral was given to the former Chief Minister at Students’ Field in Jaiaw.
Lapang’s coffin was draped with the tricolor, and floral wreaths were laid by dignitaries as a mark of respect. A three-round gun salute was also sounded during the state funeral.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, cabinet ministers, Leader of the Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma, Chief Secretary Donald P Wahlang, officials of the Meghalaya government, Acting Chief Justice HS Thangkhiew, friends and with family members, people from all walks of life, including students, came to bid adieu to the departed leader.
The Chief Minister paid a heartfelt tribute to Lapang, describing him as a self-made leader who dedicated his life to serving Meghalaya and its people. He recalled the leader’s humble beginnings, his rise to prominence, and his steadfast leadership, which served as a beacon of hope and stability.
He said the state will always be grateful for his contributions. “His memory would be a guiding light for years to come,” he added.
Leader of Opposition remembered Lapang for his long innings in public service and his extraordinary opportunity to continue serving despite his advanced age.
The Deputy Chief Minister said the state has lost a towering leader who made significant contributions to Meghalaya’s development, particularly in establishing educational institutions and welfare organisations.
Lapang’s son, Badaplak Robert Blah paid tribute to his father’s leadership and legacy and said his commitment to serving others and empowering them through education will continue to inspire future generations.
After the funeral ceremony, the cortege then proceed to the cemetery for the burial.
