H Britainwar Dan, the former MLA of Nartiang and former Chief Executive Member of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), passed away today morning after an illness.
Dan was a three-time MLA for Nartiang and cabinet minister. When not on the government benches he was also Leader of the Opposition. In the JHADC, Dan served two terms and was also CEM.
Outside of politics, Dan was a Presbyterian church elder and the father of seven children. His funeral will be held on Friday.
In a condolence message, Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma expressed grief and sorrow on the demise of Dan. Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons also expressed condolences on behalf of the Assembly. He recalled the days when he was associated with Dan and can vividly recall their open and candid discussions.
Dan was a veteran legislator and was closely associated with Ripple Kyndiah and John Deng Pohrmen, who have both predeceased him. He was mild, soft spoken with good political acumen. He will be remembered for his tireless devotion to the people and his political legacy.
