Former Chief Minister Salseng C Marak passed away in Tura today from old-age ailments at the age of 83.
Born in 1941, Marak was the first CM of Meghalaya to serve a full five-year term but he was also Chief Minister for the shortest period – 12 days – in 1998.
He had been receiving medical treatment at Tura Civil Hospital since August 12.
The former state Congress Party chief represented Resubelpara in the Assembly.
The state government announced that he would receive the honour of a state funeral on Saturday at the Resubelpara Mini Stadium starting at 12 noon. In addition, all state government offices throughout Meghalaya shall observe state mourning for three days with effect from today. During the period of state mourning the national flag will be flown at half mast where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment.
Condolences were led by current Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. “Deeply saddened to learn of the demise of former CM Salseng C Marak,” he wrote on social media. “His contributions to Meghalaya’s development will always be remembered. My condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace.”
Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma wrote a letter of condolence to Marak’s daughter, calling him a “remarkable leader” with “unwavering dedication to the people” and who made “significant contributions to the community” that will always be remembered.
“During his tenure, Mr Marak exemplified remarkable leadership, integrity, vision and service. He played a vital role in the advancement of Meghalaya and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.”
South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai, the ex-MLAs forum and the Assembly Secretariat also paid tribute to the departed.
