The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) on Monday shut down the General Post Office (GPO) in Shillong and its branch at 7th Mile Upper Shillong for operating on Behdeinkhlam festival, which is a State holiday.
FKJGP Shillong city unit president Arkinfield Khonglam demanded that the state and central governments issue directives to ensure that various departments respect such occasions.
It also warned of such action to offices and institutions if they function during the upcoming death anniversary of Khasi legendary freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem, to be observed on July 17.
The Behdeinkhlam festival is a significant celebration in the Jaintia culture, marking the driving away of evil spirits and the beginning of a new harvest season. The festival is an integral part of the Niam Tre religion, which emphasizes the importance of living in harmony with nature and respecting ancestral traditions.
