The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) in West Jaintia Hills has reiterated its opposition to any plan to introduce railways to Jaintia Hills.
The FKJGP in a statement today said it will continue to fight against any railway plans of the NFR. The organisation urged the central government not to build a railway line in the Jaintia Hills region without strict laws to safeguard the indigenous people.
The union has also urged the JHADC not to issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the NFR for the proposed project.
Reportedly the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFT) had proposed a 180-kilometre broad gauge railway line extending from Chaparmukh Junction in Assam to Jowai in Meghalaya. The route is set to traverse several key locations such as Bhoksong, Rajagaon, Baithalangso, Jengkha, Kherani, and Umrangso.
This corridor aims to address critical gaps in the existing transportation infrastructure while fostering inter-state connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya.
Various pressure groups in the state had made it clear that they are against bringing rail to Jaintia Hills as well, ostensibly because they fear it will lead to a massive influx of migrants.
