FKJGP general secretary Eldie Newton Lyngdoh has been booked under various charges both in Shillong Sadar Police Station and Laitumkhrah Police Station here in connection with the assaults and vandalisms that erupted during the unemployment rally organised by the FKJGP in the city on October 28.
At Shillong Sadar Police Station, Lyngdoh was booked under Sections 120 (B), 141, 323, 341, 353, 427, 505, 506 and 34 of IPC. At Laitumkhrah Police Station, he was booked under Sections 341, 324, 353, 505, 506 and 34 of IPC.
Lyngdoh today was quizzed for around five hours by police officials of Shillong Sadar Police Station where he was summoned to give his statement on the incidents that happened during the march by the rallyists from Motphran to Madan Iewrynghep at Laitumkhrah.
“I have given my statement and answered whatever that I have to answer,” Lyngdoh told media persons after his appearance before the police officials.
The FKJGP leader also said that the violence that occurred during the rally was not perpetrated by members of his organisation.
“I am saddened by what happened on that day but I want to make it clear that FKJGP was not involved at all. Just think with the thousands of people that took part in the rally and if my organisation was involved then the violence would have become worse than what it was,” Lyngdoh said.
Stating that as a leader he has to take the responsibility of what happened, Lyngdoh also informed that he was asked to appear at the police station again on November 4.
Lyngdoh was accompanied by several FKJGP leaders when he appeared at the police station.
Earlier, the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has directed the FKJGP to submit its reply by November 1 to the show cause notice issued to the organisation for its alleged violation of the conditions imposed by the district administration for holding the rally on unemployment in the city on October 28.
According to the notice, during the course of the rally, the members participating in the rally indulged in acts of vandalism damaging vehicles belonging to the general public and assaulting passers-by.
The notice said the conditions imposed by the district administration in the permission order dated October 25 have been blatantly violated by the participants in the rally, which is contrary to the undertaking given by FKJGP general secretary Eldie N. Lyngdoh.
At least three persons were injured and three vehicles were vandalised during the violence. They were mostly autos and scooters. One of the vehicles was a Gypsy of the army.
The marchers turned berserk and started attacking pedestrians and commuters along the road in Khyndai Lad and Dhankheti.
Many of the masked marchers punched, kicked and pushed passers-by indiscriminately causing panic and huge traffic jams. At Dhankheti junction, people were beaten up with flag poles while shopkeepers downed shutters in panic.
Police have registered three FIRs in connection with the violence. So far, one person has been arrested and efforts are on to identify the culprits who indulged in the violence.
