The Federation of Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP) has expressed surprise after a school from the plains belt of West Garo Hills ordered its teachers to attend school on Christmas Eve.
The school in New Bhaitbari, identified as Down Hill, is a private institution.
Although Christmas Eve is considered to be the start of the end-of-year festivities, it is not automatically a holiday in the private sector but that did not seem to occur to the pressure group.
“It has been learnt that the school has asked its teachers to come to school on Christmas Eve. We respect all religions but this goes against the spirit of tolerance for us. Calling for work on a day when Christmas holidays begin is really not how the spirit needs to be propagated,” the President of the FKJGP’s Garo Hills unit, Pritam Arengh, said.
