Shillong, Mar 17: Police have busted a bike theft racket originating from Gofllinks, here.
The accused are Vencentstar Tongwah (23) of Nongmensong, Lumshyiap, Kitborlang Mawlong (21) and Royalroy Lyngdoh, (23), both of Mawsiatkhnam and Ayan Kharthangmaw (21) of Mawhati village.
Initially, one Shabamutlang Syiemlieh (23) was apprehended by police on March 2. Following investigations, a broader network of criminal activity associated with the crime came to light.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said a team from Pasteur Beat House proceeded to Jowai to interrogate the arrested persons.
“The accused voluntarily admitted to have recently stolen one Yamaha R15 from Umroi, one Yamaha R15 from Goraline, Laitumkhrah and one Scooty from Golf Links while many parts of the bikes present at the site are yet to be identified,” Syiem said.
Following their disclosure that all the stolen motorcycles had been handed over to a person at Ladrymbai, the police team conducted a raid at an under-construction building in Ladrymbai, Dongwah and recovered stolen motorbikes (Yamaha R15 ML05 AB 2991 and a Yamaha Ray Z ML05 AE 1478), along with disassembled bike parts of a Yamaha R15 (Engine No. G3N4E0601845, Chassis -ME1RG67HBP0013817) and Scooty (Engine -E33SE0218026, Chassis -ME1SEJ2H8N0016166)
These parts were packed in sacks, indicating intent to disseminate the stolen goods, the SP said.
The investigation continues as authorities strive to dismantle the bike theft nexus in the region.
