The Department of Forensic Medicine NEIGRIHMS, Shillong completed a comprehensive four-week hands-on training on Virtual Autopsy today.
The first-of-its-kind training, which began on February 10, had five participants comprising faculty and residents from across the country.
The program was conducted with support from the Department of Health Research.
In his speech during certificate distribution and closing ceremony NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. (Dr) Nalin Mehta congratulated the participants in achieving the new skill. He emphasised on the bright future of the new modality and encouraged participants to take initiative to develop such centres in their respective institutes.
Prof. A. J. Patowary, Head of Forensic Medicine Department informed that NEIGRIHMS is only the second centre in India to perform Virtual Autopsy.
Virtual Autopsy is a CT scan-based non-invasive forensic technique that uses imaging to examine a deceased person. It is another way of conducting a post-mortem examination without dissection of the body. The addition of this new technology is used in determining the cause and manner of death which helps doctors to deliver more precise reports.
The Department plans to conduct more such training programs in future to Forensic Medicine specialists in the country.
