South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Caramai Kharkongor today inaugurated the first of its kind fish retail outlet in the district constructed assisted under the blue revolution 2018-19.
The outlet was constructed at Mawthawpdah village at Rs 10 lakh, of which 60 per cent was supported by the government and 40 per cent from Biolinda Lyngdoh Sangriang, a beneficiary of the scheme.
Congratulating Sangriang, the Deputy Commissioner said it is a moment of pride for the district to have a woman lead the way.
Kharkongor said the outlet is meant for hygienic retail of fishes and hoped that it will be an example for other fish outlets in the district the importance of hygiene. She also urged people to avail government schemes and fish farmers to work together vigorously to make the State self sufficient in fish production.
District superintendent of fisheries, O.L. Passah informed that another six fish retail outlets will inaugurated soon. He also outline the objectives of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), a scheme which aims to bring about ecologically healthy, economically viable, and socially inclusive development of the fisheries sector.
