A devastating fire broke out in Nongpoh early today, reducing seven shops to ashes.
Five of the shops were in the Nongpoh Town Shopping Complex and two in front of the Meghalaya Cooperative Apex Bank.
Prompt action by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel on duty at the scene helped control the flames, preventing further damage and ensuring the safety of nearby residents.
Shop owners, who suffered significant losses amounting to lakhs of rupees, expressed their distress over the incident. They believe the incident to be the result of arson and plan to register a police complaint.
They want stringent action against the responsible individuals or groups involved in this act of arson as well as financial compensation.
Unfortunately, it was discovered that the CCTV camera installed near the bank’s ATM was non-functional due to a lack of electricity. As a result, valuable footage from the incident could not be obtained.
