An FIR was registered against members of a family in Madanrting here who allegedly slaughtered their own pet dog for its meat here today.
The case was uncovered by animal rights NGO, Shillong Happy Tails.
“We were informed about an animal cruelty case in Madanrting where a family slaughtered their own pet dog for meat,” Shillong Happy Tails founder Vanish Gabby Wahlang told Highland Post. “On reaching the location we found out that the dog was already dead and burnt. Without any further delay we headed to Madanrting Police Station and filed an FIR against them.”
Police then visited the scene and the body of the dog will undergo a post-mortem tomorrow.
As they investigated this incident, Wahlang said that residents of the area informed them that several others were involved in the dog meat trade.
“We spoke to a couple of people before we learned that a big racket in illegal dog meat is going on in the Madanrting area and there are a huge number of people trading and supplying dog meat, not only in Shillong but in other places as well,” she said.
Shillong Happy Tails was given the phone number of one of the main dealers in the trade but her number had been switched off.
Locality officials promised the NGO that such incidents will not occur again and a stern warning will be issued to this effect.
During the day the NGO’s team members came across a house with several female dogs and puppies that were on sale for Rs 500.
Shillong Happy Tails adopted the puppies and informed that it will soon organise programmes to create awareness among the public about the laws relating to animal protection.
