Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Ernest Mawrie has lamented the fact that not even 15,000 farmers in Meghalaya are beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM KISAN).
The central government scheme provides income support to the families of landholding farmers. All farmers who have cultivable land in their name, irrespective of size, receive Rs 6,000 annually.
“It is very sad to learn that not even 15,000 farmers of our state are beneficiaries under PM KISAN despite the fact that the government of Meghalaya has to only verify the beneficiaries and everything else is being borne by the central government unlike in other states where crores of farmers are beneficiaries under the scheme,” Mawrie told Highland Post.
He said that this irresponsible attitude of the state government is a great loss to the farmers, who are the backbone of society.
“This is the reason I keep speaking about these issues and I urged the National People’s Party-led government to implement the various central schemes in letter and spirit for the larger interest of the people of the state,” he added.
While stating that people in Meghalaya have started to understand the benefits of the various central schemes launched by the BJP government, Mawrie said, “People in rural Meghalaya have also started to understand the importance of these schemes launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is a plus point for the state BJP in the coming state election (in 2023) because people want development.”
