The Shillong constituency and the whole of Meghalaya is suffering by not having a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP speaking for them in Parliament and with the central government.
This was stated by party ticket aspirant Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait, who is one of around half a dozen people who are chasing or have been nominated for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat as BJP candidate.
Speaking to Highland Post, Nonglait stressed that it is pointless to stay in the opposition in Delhi if crucial issues concerning the state are to see the light of day.
“The people should understand that it is crucial for us to be in the ruling side in Delhi to be able to do so many things for the state,” she stated. “If you want fruits, then you have to go to a market selling fruits. In the same way, the BJP, which is going to come to power again, will pave a way for us on issues that are under the central government and we must choose wisely.”
The lawyer also stated that she had been offered a seat in the Rajya Sabha but she wants to be in the lower house speaking on behalf of the people. Her candidacy is being backed by BJP South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai, among others.
She claimed that members of other political parties have to wait a minimum of three days to be able to meet central government authorities but an MP from the BJP would “need a maximum of only 15 minutes” to meet the Prime Minister himself.
Meanwhile, sources within the BJP hinted that the party ticket might go to sitting Pynthorumkhrah legislator AL Hek.
Nonglait said that she would be disappointed if the Lok Sabha ticket is denied to her as she really wants to put forward the issues and bring massive development to Meghalaya.
