Three pressure groups – FKJGP, GSU and ASWA – have written to the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills to express their concern regarding tree and bamboo felling.
In a letter today, the trio said that these activities threaten the environmental integrity of the region.
They cited timber smuggling and unauthorised harvesting of bamboo and firewood in the Selsella area.
“These illegal activities not only pose a significant threat to our precious natural resources but also endanger the delicate balance of our local ecosystem,” the letter said. “The indiscriminate cutting of trees and bamboo without proper permits and environmental assessments will have devastating consequences for our environment, including soil erosion, loss of biodiversity and disruption of vital ecological processes. We urge your esteemed department to take immediate and decisive action to put an end to these illegal practices.”
